Nigel Edwards

Nuffield Trust

CEO

Since 2014, Nigel Edwards has been the CEO of the Nuffield Trust, the independent health think tank that aims “to improve the quality of healthcare in the UK by providing evidence-based research and policy analysis and informing and generating debate”. He previously worked in the private sector at KPMG’s Global Centre of Excellence for Health and Life Sciences and was a senior fellow at the King’s Fund. As policy director at the NHS Confederation for 12 years, Edwards oversaw the NHS European Office as well as the organisation’s communication services. He has been critical of the government’s NHS funding proposals and of immigration policy in relation to NHS staffing, noting in 2019 that “the recent immigration white paper leaves another shadow across the care sector, threatening to worsen staffing problems.” Edwards has advised several countries on the development of their healthcare systems, including the governments of Iraq, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan. He has been an advisor to the World Health Organization on hospital strategy since 2011.
