Kate Osamor, daughter of Labour peer Baroness Osamor, was first elected as the Labour and Co-operative MP for Edmonton in 2015. Born in Haringey, Osamor read Third World Studies at the University of East London. After graduating, Osamor worked for The Big Issue, and later worked for over ten years in the NHS as an executive assistant in an out of hours service and later as a GP practice manager. During this time, she also became active in the trade union movement. In 2014, Osamor became a member of the National Executive Committee and the following year was elected as the Labour MP for Edmonton. Osamor was one of 36 MPs to nominate Jeremy Corbyn as a candidate for the Labour leadership election in 2015 and following his victory became his PPS. In January 2016, Osamor became shadow women and equalities minister. Later that year, she was promoted to the post of shadow international development secretary. She stepped down after controversy surrounding her continued employment of her son who had been convicted of drug possession. She has been the chair of the APPG for Nigeria since 2015.
