Abena Oppong-Asare was one of the first two British-Ghanians to be elected an MP (along with Bell Ribeiro-Addy) in 2019. She has degrees in politics and international law. Oppong-Asare previously held jobs working for MPs, as well as spending time as a researcher for the London Assembly Labour Group. She has also been a local councillor, with her portfolio including deputy Labour leader and shadow cabinet spokesperson roles. In 2020, she was appointed PPS to the shadow secretary of state for environment, food and rural affairs, Luke Pollard. Late that year, she became PPS to the newly-appointed shadow chancellor, Anneliese Dodds. On 16 October 2020, Oppong-Asare was promoted to Shadow Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, replacing Wes Streeting, who was moved to the position of Shadow Minister for Schools following resignations the previous day relating to the Covert Human Intelligence Sources (Criminal Conduct) Bill. With her home in Erith and Thamesmead, Oppong-Asare’s key manifesto pledges included representing her constituents’ interests with regards to transport, housing, policing, the environment, and the NHS. Her majority stands at 3,758.
