Snapshot
Lia Nici became the first Conservative to represent Great Grimsby since 1945 when she was elected for the seat at the 2019 general election. She unseated the incumbent MP Melanie Onn with an impressive 14.7 per cent in a seat that voted 71 per cent to leave the European Union. Prior to politics, Nici worked as a lecturer at a further education college now known as the Grimsby Institute. She is also the former executive producer of Estuary TV, a local channel based at the institute that launched in 1997 and in 2013 was rolled out to Freeview. The channel closed in August 2018. During this time Nici also served as a Laceby parish councillor and later represented Scartho ward on North east Lincolnshire Council. On the council she was chair of the Economic Scrutiny Panel and deputy chair of the Children and Lifelong Learning Scrutiny Panel. Nici is a member of APPGs on hydrogen, fisheries and axylo spondyloarthritis. In 2020, she was one of 25 MPs to write to the Home Office requesting “stronger enforcement” against refugees crossing the English Channel. That year, she was appointed PPS in the DCMS.
