Snapshot

Anthony Mangnall returned Totnes to the Conservatives in 2019 after the previous MP Sarah Wollaston joined The Independent Group and later the Liberal Democrats. Wollaston did stand for her new party in the safe Conservative seat, but was comfortably defeated by Mangnall, who won by 12,724 votes. The son of an army officer, he read History, Politics and Sociology at the University of Exeter, after which he took up a job with William Hague, the then foreign secretary, during the Arab Spring. After his time with Hauge he worked as a shipping broker in a role that saw him travel around the UK and the world . He later worked on ending the trade of ivory in the UK and on the Preventing of Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative which was established by his former boss William Hague and Angelina Jolie. Most recently, he was a special adviser to Alun Cairns during his time as Welsh secretary. Mangnall has said China’s human rights record and preventing sexual violence worldwide are the most important issues facing the globe. His favourite poem is Percy Shelley’s Ozymandias, which he has called “a reminder not to get wrapped up in your own self-importance!”
