Snapshot

Born in 1972, Justin Madders studied law at the University of Sheffield before qualifying as a solicitor in 1998. He is a former Labour councillor, serving as leader of the opposition on Cheshire West and Chester Council and as leader of Ellesmere Port and Neston Borough Council. His first attempt at parliament was in 2005, when failed to unseat former chancellor George Osborne in Tatton. In 2015, he told Cheshire Live: “I know from my work as a councillor how difficult people are finding things and I want to do my bit to create a better future for us all.” Madders was soon appointed to Labour’s frontbench as a shadow health minister. He supported Owen Smith in the Labour leadership election of 2016. Alongside his health role, in 2018 Madders was appointed a shadow business minister. Representing a Leave-voting seat, Madders was forced to resign from the Labour frontbench in March 2019 after defying the Labour whip to vote against a bid to hold a second referendum. Madders has campaigned to support animal welfare, ending DSS discrimination and broadening opportunities for young people through the “future leaders programme”, which he endorses.
