Snapshot
Chris Elmore, Labour MP for Ogmore, began his working life as a trainee butcher before moving on to work in further education. As councillor for Casteland on Vale of Glamorgan Council, Elmore served as a cabinet member for children’s services and schools, before standing unsuccessfully as Labour candidate for Vale of Glamorgan at the 2015 general election. He won the Ogmore seat at a by-election in 2016, and upon joining parliament joined a number of committees including the Justice and Welsh Affairs committees. In 2017 he was elected as chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Rail in Wales, and has vocally opposed the government’s cancellation of the planned electrification of the Great Western Mainline between Cardiff and Swansea. Elmore currently sits on the Procedure Committee, the Committee of Privileges and the Committee on Standards, and is particularly interested in issues concerning young people, recently urging government to protect children from the internet “Wild West” as well as campaigning against cuts to Universal Credit. He serves as opposition whip in the Commons and as shadow minister for Scotland, supporting Ian Murray, the shadow secretary of state for Scotland.
