Anthony Browne

Anthony Browne, the Conservative member for South Cambridgeshire, began his career in journalism. He was a business reporter and economics correspondent for both the four and a the BBC and The Observer, followed by working at The Times as environment editor, Europe correspondent, and chief political correspondent. In 2007 he became director of Policy Exchange and was instrumental in developing strategy for David Cameron’s team. In 2009 he joined City Hall to direct the economic and business policy of then-mayor, Boris Johnson – Browne wrote Johnson’s re-election manifesto in 2012. Following this, Browne became the head of the British Banker’s Association, where he was faced with the significant challenges of the LIBOR crisis and the PPI mis-selling scandal, as well as leading Brexit negotiations with the Government and the EU on the behalf of the banking sector. Since leaving this role in 2017, Browne has chaired the government’s regulatory policy committee, and become involved in a number of start-up technology firms as an adviser and investor. He was elected to parliament at the 2019 general election and currently sits on the treasury committee.
