Snapshot

Alan Brown is the SNP member for Kilmarnock and Loudoun. He grew up in his constituency and describes himself as “Killie through and through”. After attending the University of Glasgow, Brown embarked on a career as a civil engineer, working in both the public and private sector for 21 years. In 2007, Brown successfully ran as an SNP councillor to East Ayrshire Council for the Irvine Valley ward, where he topped the poll for first preferences. He was re-elected in the 2012 East Ayrshire Council elections, again exceeding the quota for first preferences. During his time as a councillor, he held the position of spokesperson for strategic planning and resources, where he helped to launch a programme to upgrade local schools and build council homes. Brown said that his “lucky break” was the advice of a retiring councillor whose seat he was advised to take. In the 2015 general election, Brown successfully defeated the incumbent Labour MP, Cathy Jamieson, with 55.7 per cent of the vote. During his time in Westminster, he has been the SNP’s spokesperson for transport, infrastructure and energy. He has also sat on the environment, food and rural affairs committee, and the European scrutiny committee. A proud Scotsman, Brown stated that he would not alter his accent after it was revealed that Hansard reporters often ask him for “translations” of his questions due to his thick accent. Brown has cited climate change and nuclear disarmament as particular policy interests of his. He favours introducing proportional representation at UK general elections and the abolition of the House of Lords. Brown is a Kilmarnock FC fan and enjoys reading Scottish and First World War history.
