Before his election to parliament he had a decade of experience in local politics, serving as a town councillor in Norfolk, for UKIP until he joined the Conservatives in 2016, as mayor of Holt and later a district councillor. Delivering Brexit was at the heart of his campaignHe Baker celebrated the government’s £16 billion defence spending, announced in November 2020, as “a chance to end the era of retreat” and “bolster our global influence”. He has said that his work with Norfolk and Suffolk MPs persuaded the government to consider adding wind energy to the National Grid. He has also said the future of social care and the challenges of an ageing population are particularly pronounced in his constituency.
