Snapshot
Shaun Bailey became the first Conservative MP in his constituency since its creation in 1974. He was aged just 26 at the time of his election, and now holds the seat with a relatively comfortable majority of 3,799. Bailey was raised in Shropshire in a single parent family. He went on to study French and Law at Aberystwyth University. After graduating, Bailey worked as paralegal before becoming a trainee solicitor at Barclays. He then became a parish councillor. In the House of Commons, Bailey has been most vocal on the topics of crime, the NHS and the protection of local high streets. He is a self-taught Welsh speaker. Since 2020, he has been a member of the work and pensions and public accounts committees. In October 2020, Bailey condemned the abuse his staff and in particular his mum had received, blaming Angela Raynor’s use of the word “scum” to describe him in a recent debate. Bailey said that “the language we use has impact people beyond us” and called for Raynor to apologise to his mum.
