Huawei representatives faced a Brussels court this week, accused of corruption and money laundering linked to their lobbying efforts in the EU. As the investigation unfolds, it could reshape how foreign entities operate within European institutions.

In a significant development within the European Union's ongoing corruption probe, representatives from Chinese technology giant Huawei appeared before the Brussels Chamber of Accusation this week. The hearings, conducted behind closed doors, involved three Huawei employees and a managing director from Forum Europe, a Brussels-based conference organiser. All individuals are suspected of corruption, participation in a criminal organisation, and money laundering, though they are presumed innocent pending further proceedings. The investigation centres on allegations that Huawei made illicit payments to secure an open letter signed by eight European lawmakers in support of the company's interests. According to an arrest warrant obtained by POLITICO, a sum of €15,000 was allegedly offered to the author of the 5G letter, with each co-signatory purportedly offered €1,500. Belgian prosecutors have charged five individuals in connection with this scheme. Among the suspects are a Huawei lobbyist, a senior executive, and a procurement manager, identified as Han W. and Valerio O. Additionally, a managing director from Forum Europe faces charges of active corruption involving a person holding public office in an organisation governed by public international law. Forum Europe has declined to comment on the matter. The European Parliament has responded by suspending access to its premises for Huawei lobbyists as a precautionary measure. A parliamentary spokesperson stated that this decision aims to safeguard the integrity of legislative processes amid the ongoing investigation. Huawei has expressed its commitment to legal compliance, asserting a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption. The company emphasised its dedication to adhering to all applicable laws and regulations. As the investigation progresses, it is likely to have significant implications for EU-China relations and the operations of foreign entities within Europe....
