Snapshot

Seema Malhotra worked as a management consultant, first at Accenture and later at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Malhotra is the founder of the Fabian Women’s Network, a division of the socialist organisation which aims to develop democratic socialism through discussion as opposed to revolutionary means. Malhotra stood for South West London in the London Assembly elections in 2004 but came in third place. Malhotra served as an adviser to MPs Liam Byrne and Ian Austin, as well as working as a special adviser to Harriet Harman during her stint as acting leader of the Labour party in 2010. Malhotra stood as the Labour candidate in the Feltham and Heston by-election in 2011, winning the seat with a majority of 6,203. In 2014, Ed Miliband appointed Malhotra as shadow minister for preventing violence against women and girls. In 2015, Jeremy Corbyn appointed Malhotra as shadow chief secretary to the treasury. Malhotra was one of several members of the shadow cabinet to resign the following year over their opposition to Corbyn’s leadership. She is currently a member of the committee on exiting the European Union and the Commons reference group on representation and inclusion.
