Snapshot

John McNally was elected to parliament as the MP for Falkirk in May 2015, beating Labour’s Eric Joyce with a majority of 19,701 – the largest majority for any MP in Scotland. He maintained a strong lead in the 2017 general election, albeit with a cut majority of 4,923. Despite having served on Falkirk Council for ten years, McNally might be best-known in his hometown of Denny as the local barber. He is the SNP’s Environment spokesperson, and has campaigned on issues around recycling facilities and sustainable fishing. He is chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on the hair industry and a member of the APPG on disability. McNally campaigned strongly for Remain in the EU referendum and was one of 114 MPs who voted against triggering Article 50. In October 2017, he showed his penchant for parliamentary theatrics when he held up a red card during prime minister’s questions to draw attention to Conservative MP Douglas Ross missing a Commons vote on Universal Credit so that he could referee a football match in Barcelona. McNally saw his majority trebled in the 2019 general, from below 5,000 in 2017 to almost 15,000.
