Snapshot

Plaid Cymru MP for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr since 2010, Jonathan Edwards was born and raised in the mining village of Capel Hendre. Having gained a postgraduate degree in international history and served as a local councillor and town sheriff, Edwards served as chief of staff for prominent Plaid Cymru members Rhodri Glyn Thomas and Adam Price. Replacing Price as candidate for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr at the 2010 general election, Edwards embarked upon a variety of roles in the House of Commons, serving as party spokesperson on policy areas such as Culture, Media and Sports, Communities and Local Government, Transport, Business, Innovation and Skills, Foreign Intervention and Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. He has also sat on the Committee on Exiting the European Union and the Welsh Affairs Committee, describing the Brexit bill as “the biggest job-killing act in Welsh economic history” and called for a second public vote. Edwards received a police caution for domestic violence in June 2020 and was suspended from Plaid Cymru for a year from July 2020 (some criticised the party for acting too slowly). He now sits in the Commons as an Independent MP.
