Snapshot

Sara Britcliffe became the Conservatives’ youngest MP when she was elected as the MP for Hyndburn in December 2019 at the age of just 24. She is the first woman ever to represent the seat, and the Conservative since 1992, having taken the seat from Labour on a 9.9 per cent swing. She is the daughter of Peter Britcliffe, a former Lancashire councillor and mayor of Hyndburn who also ran to be the area’s MP in 1997 and 2001. When her father stood down from the council in 2018, she succeeded him as the councillor for St. Andrew’s ward. Britcliffe was the first MP to give her maiden speech from outside the Commons after parliament was forced to adapt to virtual debates as a result of Covid-19. In this speech, she stated, “Over the coming months, I am sure we will beat this pandemic, and I will be ready to return to my main mission in this Parliament—fighting for levelled-up funding and investment in the north”. Britcliffe currently sits on the women and equalities committee and is vice-chair of the net zero APPG.
