Snapshot
Gareth Bacon is a former financial recruitment manager and was head of the public sector division of Martin Ward Anderson. Bacon has been closely involved in politics for the whole of his working life, as a local councillor from 1998, and a prominent member of the London Assembly. Bacon was first elected as an additional member in 2008 and worked closely with Boris Johnson when appointed Chairman of the London Fire & Emergency Planning Authority. He also became leader of the GLA Conservative Group at City Hall in 2015. Bacon leans to the right of his party, and described the behaviour of the 2017 to 2019 parliament as “reprehensible” in its failure to honour manifesto commitments to fulfil the referendum result and upon his election promised to restore “some faith in Parliament and our political system”. In 2020, he was one of the few Conservative MPs to vote against restricting abortion activists’ right to protest out side abortion clinics. Since 2020, he has been a member of the influential Public Accounts Committee and the Backbench Business Committee.
