Peter Aldous

Peter Aldous is a former chartered surveyor, educated at Harrow School. His family are farm owners in the North of England and Aldous has a degree in Land Management. He became a councillor in 1999, becoming deputy leader of the Counservative Group on Suffolk County Council in 2002. In the House of Commons, Aldous has chaired APPGs on energy storage and intelligent energy and has twice been a member of the Environmental Audit Committee. Aldous has stated that his top priority as an MP is attracting “diverse and interesting jobs into Waveney”. He has said: “In Waveney, I believe that we should make use of those skills that are already here. For instance, the renewable energy sector provides an exciting opportunity for utilising the skills built up over many years in the offshore oil and gas industry.” Aldous has also criticised the Conservative government’s Universal Credit system, in particular the five week wait for payments. In October 2020, Aldous advocated for the extension of the benefit deduction freeze (as was enacted in April 2020), calling it a “lifeline to many vulnerable people” during the coronavirus pandemic.
