John Bew

10 Downing Street

Head of foreign affairs and integration review policy unit

One of the few academics in government, Professor Bew works across foreign affairs, defence and Northern Ireland policy for Number Ten. Bew also has a key role in cultivating links between Number Ten – and specifically the prime minister – and the Biden administration. Before becoming a Spad, Bew was Professor of History and Foreign Policy at King’s College London, a contributing editor to the New Statesman and the author of five books, including the acclaimed Citizen Clem: A Life of Atlee. His father is Lord Bew, who was a key figure in advising Nobel Prize laureate and unionist leader David Trimble in the run-up to the Belfast agreement.
