Snapshot

Born to parents from Nevis, Claudia Webbe grew up in Leicester, and studied social science at De Montfort University. She chose not to follow in her mother’s dressmaking footsteps, and worked as a senior advisor in the Ken Livingstone Mayoralty, founded and chaired Trident Independent Advisory Group, and was elected to Islington Council in 2010, 2014 and 2018. Webbe returned to her roots in 2019, and won the Leicester East seat with a 6,019 majority. She was considered an ally of Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour and after her election spoke to Mace of her pride in Leicester’s “rich diversity and [the] way in which communities have come together embracing that diversity,” although she has lamented the lack of proper public infrastructure and the harmful impact of cars on the environment. She currently sits on the Environmental Audit Committee, the Backbench Business Committee, the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Committees on Arms Export Controls, and is a member of the Socialist Campaign Group. Webbe was suspended from the Labour party in September 2020 after being charged with harassment and now sits in the Commons as an Independent MP.
