Snapshot

Maggie Throup was first elected as the Conservative MP for Erewash in 2015. Born in Shipley, she worked as a biomedical scientist at the Calderdale Health Authority, later moving into marketing and public relations and becoming director of a pharmaceutical company. She first stood for parliament in the 2005 general election, when she unsuccessfully contested Colne Valley, and again came up short in 2010, this time contesting Solihull where the Liberal Democrat incumbent won by just 175 votes. In 2015, she was finally elected to the House of Commons as MP for Erewash, holding the seat for the Conservatives with a majority of 3,584. Following her election she joined the Scottish Affairs Committee and the Health and Social Affairs Committee. In 2018, Throup was appointed as a parliamentary private secretary within the Department of Health and Social Care, and in September 2019 became a whip. Throup voted to remain in the EU during the 2016 referendum but has an “unwavering commitment to honour the outcome of the referendum”. Throup is a Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Science and chaired the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the Furniture Industry.
