Snapshot
First elected as Labour MP for Alyn and Deeside in 2001, the Enfield-born Mark Tami was a trade unionist, serving as head of policy at the amalgamated Electrical Engineers Union and serving on the TUC General Council. His political career began in 2001 when he succeeded Barry Jones as the Labour MP for Alyn and Deeside. Following his election, he joined the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee and later became parliamentary private secretary to Dawn Primarolo, the then paymaster general, but resigned in 2006 alongside several of his colleagues over Tony Blair’s refusal to set a date for his resignation as prime minister. He returned to the government under new prime minister Gordon Brown as assistant whip, and was appointed pairing whip by subsequent Labour leader Ed Miliband. Tami campaigned to remain in the EU during the 2016 referendum and voted against Theresa May’s withdrawal agreement, calling it “a complete failure.” He is an advocate for better support for cancer patients and their families (due to personal experience) and has recently been chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Stem Cell Transplantation. He was the only Labour MP to be re-elected in North Wales in 2019.
