Snapshot

Andrew Slaughter has been an MP since 2005, first representing Ealing, Acton and Shepherd’s Bush, and Hammersmith since 2010 after a boundary change. A local West Londoner, he was a barrister and leader of the Hammersmith and Fulham council before he became an MP. Slaughter was also the director of a charity working against homelessness for 20 years. As well as being a member of the Justice Committee, he served (from 2010 to 2016) as shadow justice minister and later as shadow housing minister (from 2016 to 2017). Slaughter resigned as shadow minister for justice in 2016, citing his belief that Jeremy Corbyn was “not the best person” to lead the Labour party in light of the result of the EU referendum. In his letter of resignation, he added “I also very much regret the fact that this undermines you personally,” saying that they prioritised similar issues such as social housing for London constituents and the rights of Palestinians. Slaughter is the secretary of the Britain-Palestine APPG and vice-chair of Labour Friends of Palestine and the Middle East. He resigned as a minister in 2017, again due to his strong pro-EU stance.
