Snapshot

A sizeable 50 per cent majority makes Wendy Morton’s West Midlands seat of Aldridge-Brownhill one of the safest Conservative seats in the country. A longtime supporter of former prime minister David Cameron’s referendum on Brexit, Morris has voted frequently against UK membership of the EU. She has also voted against the rights of EU nationals to remain in the UK and consistently opposed greater EU integration. In January 2018, Morton was appointed by the prime minister as an assistant government whip, having previously served as a parliamentary private secretary to ministers at the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy and to the secretary of state for international development. As a backbencher, Morris has successfully steered two private members’ bills through parliament, the first ensuring that Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity retains the royalties to J.M. Barrie’s play Peter Pan. The second bill will have gained her fans in the press gallery, giving journalists greater opportunity to examine public documents and ensuring that there are greater levels of transparency in government. In July 2019, Morton was appointed parliamentary under-secretary of state at the Ministry of Justice, a role she kept after the December 2019 general election.
