Imran Hussain was brought up in Bradford. He started his working life stacking shelves in a supermarket and later worked as a barrister. Hussain became a councillor and in 2008, became deputy leader of Bradford council’s Labour group. From 2010 to 2015, he served as the deputy leader of Bradford City Council. In 2015, he rebelled against his party to vote against the welfare bill calling it “cruel and unfair”. During the campaign, Hussain rejected a £1,000 donation from former prime minister, Tony Blair due to Hussain’s opposition to the Iraq war. Hussain went on to nominate Jeremy Corbyn for the Labour leadership in 2015. In 2016, Hussain was appointed shadow international development minister, and in 2017 became shadow minister of state for justice. In 2020, Keir Starmer appointed him shadow minister for employment rights. In this role, he has levelled questions over the treatment of cab drivers in Bradford. Hussain is a member of the Socialist Campaign Group of Labour MPs. He is a member of the APPG on Kashmir, and in 2020 it was revealed that the Pakistani government spent £7000 on business trips for Hussain to attend talks on Kashmir in Pakistan during 2019.
