Snapshot
Stewart Hosie, former deputy leader of the Scottish National Party, has been MP for Dundee East since 2005. Having worked in IT for two decades, including running his own business, Hosie became involved in politics as the first youth convenor for the SNP from 1986-89. He stood for election in Kirkcaldy in 1992, 1997 and 1999, each time unsuccessfully, before gaining his seat of Dundee East from Labour in the 2005 general election with a majority of 383. In the Commons, Hosie became the SNP’s spokesperson for home affairs, the Treasury and women as well as becoming the party’s chief whip in 2007. After re-election in 2010, he joined the Treasury Committee and later became the party’s Westminster leader, before becoming deputy leader in 2014. He was re-elected at the 2015 general election with a much-increased majority of 19,162 and became the SNP’s economics spokesperson. His majority at the 2017 general election was disappointing (6,645) and he stood down as deputy leader, though he made significant gains in the 2019 election (to 13,375). Hosie is currently the SNP spokesperson for trade and sits on the Panel of Chairs and the Intelligence and Security Committee.
