Snapshot
Darren Henry served in the Royal Air Force for 26 years before resigning his commission as a Squadron Leader in 2013 and joining the Conservatives in 2014. Henry developed a relationship with Robert Jenrick, aiding in Jenrick’s campaign to win the 2014 Newark by-election – a relationship that would later come to benefit Henry. He soon became an active party member and, alongside working in logistics, stood as Conservative candidate for Wolverhampton North East in the 2015 general election, coming second to Labour’s Emma Reynolds. In 2017, he was elected Wiltshire councillor and in December 2019, became MP for Broxtowe. He leveraged his relationship with Robert Jenrick during the 2019 campaign, getting Jenrick to pledge £25 million to a ward in Broxtowe if Henry won the seat. Henry’s campaign included promises for a ban on payday loans advertising and budgetary help for foodbank users. He has spoken of his pride at being the first Conservative parliamentarian of West Indian heritage, and has criticised the Labour party’s handling of the Windrush Lessons Review, calling their perceived party politics “shameful”. Henry is currently the co-chair of the Midlands Engine All-Party Parliamentary Group.
