Snapshot

Gareth Davies is drenched in business. Not only is he son of a businessowner but he is a self-described “businessman in politics”. That is not all he’s drenched in: 14 years in the investment industry as head of responsible investment solutions has given him an enthusiasm for financial evolution and improvement. Davies pinpoints a specific interest in the intersection of business and policy; in particular, the way legislation influences “how investors select fund managers and decide how to direct their capital”. Davies is a credible proponent of the “levelling up” project promised by the Conservative election campaign in 2019. In 2020, he said that he was drawing up proposals for a state development bank similar to Germany’s DfW; he sees an increased use of private capital in the UK economy as a positive. During Davies’ time as a postgraduate student, he visited North Korea. Witnessing the “devastating” living conditions combined with apparent connections between China and Pyongyang, Davies has become something of a China sceptic. Correspondingly, Davies is now a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China. Since 2020, he has also been a member of the Finance Committee.
