Snapshot
Born in Bridgend, Wayne David is a former history teacher and author of two books on European politics. David served as an MEP and treasurer of the European Parliamentary Labour Party from 1989 to 1991 before becoming its leader for the next three years. In 1994, he was appointed to the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee for four years. David’s Labour party loyalty has been reflected in a steady string of parliamentary appointments since his election as an MP. Under Gordon Brown, he was parliamentary under-secretary of state for Wales. Under Ed Miliband, he was shadow minister for Europe and later for shadow minister for political and constitutional reform. Under Jeremy Corbyn, he was shadow minister for the armed forces. Upon being appointed shadow minister for the Africa and the Middle East in 2020, David commented that “if coronavirus has taught us anything, it is that we all live in a global community”. His global outlook is reflected in his membership of the United Nations Association’s Cardiff branch. He has been a member of the European Scrutiny and Welsh Affairs commitees and, until 2020, sat on the defence committee.
