Snapshot
Stella Creasy has become known as an outspoken Labour MP and a favourite among the party’s membership. Creasy was head of public affairs at the Scout Association and later a councillor for Waltham Forest, rising to deputy mayor and then mayor for a brief four month period. Under Ed Miliband’s leadership, Creasy served as shadow minister for Home Affairs from 2011 until 2013, and as shadow minister for Business, Innovation and Skills from 2013 until 2015. During her time in Westminster, Creasy has become known for a number of campaigns, including for greater regulation on payday loans and, most recently, a campaign to change the law in Northern Ireland to allow women to have abortions. Creasy has made enemies in the Eurosceptic wing of her party. For instance, she opted to vote against Jeremy Corbyn in the PLP’s no-confidence motion in the leader in the aftermath of the EU referendum. She has also been outspoken about the abuse that MPs – particularly female MPs – receive on social media. Creasy has found herself the target of misogynistic abuse and even death threats as a result of particular stances she has taken.
