Snapshot

A notorious loyalist, Gregory Campbell first joined the DUP in the 1970s. He became a councillor on Londonderry City Council in 1981. Campbell first tried to enter parliament in 1983, gaining election only on his fifth attempt. Campbell has frequently called out companies and media figures (from The Simpsons to Dido) for what so-called offences against Northern Irish history. In 2013, Campbell made a successful parliamentary motion to stop a one-off concept car (designed by Kia) from being produced due to its Italian-derived name “Provo”. Refusing to apologise for parodying the Irish language in the Assembly, he instead emphasised that the DUP would never agree to an Irish Language Act, saying of his opponents: “we will treat their entire wish list as no more than toilet paper”. From 2004, he has been a recurrent member of the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee, on which he currently sits. Since 2015, he has been shadow DUP spokesperson on international development and on international development. He has been associated with groups, such as the creationist lobby group The Caleb Foundation. Campbell deemed homosexuality an “evil, abhorrent practice”, consequentially voting against LGBT+ inclusion in relationship education.
