Coinbase Taps David Plouffe as Crypto Lobbying Accelerates in Washington

Coinbase has appointed Democratic strategist David Plouffe to its advisory council, deepening its bipartisan political strategy amid expanding crypto lobbying efforts. The move follows record industry spending and aligns with a broader push to influence emerging legislation in Congress during a favourable shift under the Trump administration.

David Plouffe, noted Democratic strategist renowned for managing Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign and advising Kamala Harris in 2024, has joined Coinbase’s Global Advisory Council. His induction comes amid a significant shift in the cryptocurrency sector’s political engagement as it integrates figures from across the political spectrum. This appointment further diversifies the council, which already includes Donald Trump’s former campaign manager and several ex‑Senators. Plouffe’s entry follows a period of heightened political spending from the crypto industry. In the 2024 US congressional cycle, a super PAC affiliated with the sector spent in excess of $130 million, with Coinbase emerging as its principal contributor. That financial investment corresponded with swifter legislative movement towards crypto‑friendly regulation in Washington. Concurrently, Congress has made marked progress on both stablecoin and broader crypto‑market legislation. The stablecoin regulatory bill, known as the GENIUS Act, has advanced through Senate procedure while a separate market‑structure framework has progressed through multiple House committees. This legislative activity reflects the intensifying role of crypto in shaping financial policy. Plouffe emphasises the bipartisan strategy Coinbase is pursuing. With advisors from both Republican and Democratic backgrounds, the company aims to embed crypto within the mainstream political dialogue across party lines. President Trump’s renewed advocacy for cryptocurrency has influenced the regulatory climate. During his campaign, he pledged to position the United States as the global centre for crypto innovation and to relax constraints on retirement‑account crypto investments. These shifts in policy orientation followed Trump administration moves to dismantle restrictions previously imposed by Biden regulators. In parallel, Coinbase has actively bolstered its presence in Washington. The firm has increased lobbying efforts, expanded political contributions, and appointed a diverse Global Advisory Council—including high‑profile political figures such as Plouffe—to steer policy engagement. The council is positioned as a sounding board for both policy and corporate strategy. Plouffe’s previous roles include senior advisor in the Obama White House, leadership positions at Uber, and work with the Harris campaign. His breadth of experience spans political narrative, public advocacy, and campaign coordination. His presence on the advisory council lends institutional legitimacy to Coinbase in the eyes of Democratic policymakers.  Coinbase continues to emerge as a major actor in shaping crypto regulation. Apart from advisory appointments, the company has acquired significant assets such as Deribit in May 2025, achieved entry into the S&P 500, and navigated legal disputes with regulators—all reinforcing its stature as a market leader. Such developments complement its political strategy . The advisory council now blends experienced figures from both sides of the aisle, setting a precedent in the consolidation of crypto‑industry influence in political processes. As Congress progresses through legislative proposals and the Trump administration encourages a supportive regulatory agenda, Coinbase’s governance approach reflects the sector’s determination to shape enduring policy outcomes...
