Andrew RT Davies began his second term as leader of the Welsh Conservatives in January 2021, after a seven-year stint from 2011 to 2018. He succeeded Paul Davies, who resigned in scandal after breaching COVID rules. RT Davies entered the Senedd in 2007 and quickly became a shadow minister for transport. His rapid rise to the top of the Welsh Conservatives was completed four years later when he became leader of the Cardiff grouping, winning 53% of the vote. During his tenure RT Davies became a leading voice for the UK’s Vote Leave campaign, making enemies among the nation’s largely Remain sympathetic Conservative grouping. Davies was subject to a successful leadership challenge by Paul Davies, departing the role for three years till his recent return.
