Straight in at number one, despite being one of the newest Spads on the block, is Dan Rosenfield, who was appointed Johnson’s chief of staff in November 2020, before a bedding-in period. He officially took the reins in early January 2021. After the dramatic exits of both Dominic Cummings and Lee Cain, formerly Johnson’s director of communications, the appointment of Rosenfield is a move back to a traditional, non-factional approach at Number Ten. Rosenfield has over a decade’s experience at the Treasury, including being placed in charge of the budget for the 2012 London Olympics and, from 2007, working as the critical position of principal private secretary to both Alistair Darling and George Osborne over a four-year period. In October 2008, during crunch bailout negotiations with the banks, it was Rosenfield‘s credit card that was used to order Treasury officials £350-worth of curry – on the taxpayer – from Gandhi’s Indian restaurant in Kennington. The die-hard Manchester United fan has worked at Bank of America and been a partner at Hakluyt, a management consultancy founded by former MI6 members. Rosenfeld is an alumnus of University College London and is chair of the board of trustees at World Jewish Relief.
