Pete Wishart is the SNP’s longest-serving current MP. Born in Dunfermline, he was in the music industry for 20 years, being a member of two Scottish rock groups. Wishart has served as the SNP’s spokesperson for a number of policy areas including justice, transport and home affairs. From 2001 to 2007, he was the SNP’s chief whip. In 2008, he became a member of the Scottish Affairs Select Committee which he chaired from 2015. Wishart has served on several other select committees, including the Administration Committee and the Speaker’s Advisory Committee on Works of Art, the Liaison Sub-Committee on the Effectiveness and Influence of the Select Committee System. In 2018, he ruled himself out of the SNP deputy leadership election that followed the resignation of Angus Robertson, admitting he didn’t have “sufficient support” to run. He currently plays in the band MP4, made of four MPs. He has been the chair of APPGs on intellectual property and plumbers’ pensions. Wishart is co-chair of the APPG on music. He sits on committees for liaison, members estimate and the House of Commons Commission. Wishart has chaired the Scottish Affairs Committee since 2020.
