Jamie Stone

Born in Edinburgh, Jamie Stone worked in numerous sectors including the oil industry. In 1986, he was elected as a councillor to the Ross and Cromarty District Council, staying there until the council was abolished. Stone went on to serve as a member of Highland Council from 1995 to 1999, leaving once he was elected as an MSP representing Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross. In this role, Stone became the Scottish Liberal Democrats’ spokesperson on housing as well as the party’s deputy spokesperson on health. After leaving his seat for personal reasons in 2011, Stone attempted to be re-elected in the same area in 2016 but came second. He was elected in 2017 and subsequently re-elected in 2019 with a small majority of 204. Stone has spent his time in Westminster campaigning for more Far North representation, and in July 2019 urged any Conservative Party leadership hopeful to appoint a “Minister for the Highlands and Islands” as he argued that “power is being dragged out of the Highlands to Edinburgh.” He has been the Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Scotland in the past, but is currently their voice for defence, appointed in 2019.
