Nick Smith

Born into a family of miners and steelworkers in Tredegar, Nick Smith began his political career as a Labour party organiser in Wales. He then took his expertise overseas and worked as an international democracy adviser for the Democratic Party in the United States and for the Westminster Foundation for Democracy. Smith went on to work as an agent for the late Frank Dobson and also Emily Thornberry. He subsequently dipped in and out of politics in senior roles, including as campaigns manager for the NSPCC and director of policy and partnerships at the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists. He has since been appointed as an opposition whip. Recently, Smith has been involved in many campaigns, including against the interest rates disadvantaged families are charged by rent-to-own firms for household appliance purchases. In 2018, The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) announced that it was considering a cap on the sector, a move Smith called “a big step forward.” Smith nominated Sir Keir Starmer as his choice for Labour leadership contender. He is married to fellow Labour MP Jenny Chapman.
