Julia Lopez

Julia Lopez was born in Harlow, Essex in 1984. Her entry into politics was as a researcher for Conservative MP Mark Field. Lopez continued the role during Field’s time as a minister. In 2014, she was elected as a councillor on Tower Hamlets Council, representing the ward of St Katherine’s and Wapping. Lopez entered the House of Commons at the 2017 general election, holding the safe Conservative seat of Hornchurch and Upminster with a majority of 17,723. She alleges that “corruption, electoral fraud and maladministration” in Tower Hamlets as having inspired her to enter politics. Lopez voted to leave the EU in 2016 and voted against Theresa May’s withdrawal agreement on all three occasions. She has sat on the international trade committee since September 2017. She has been supportive of Boris Johnson’s leadership of the Conservative party, declaring after his victory: “Boris unashamedly peddles optimism and my goodness, the country is ready for it.” Lopez has co-authored two books about the financial crisis and is writing a third about the ways in which London changed in the first decade of this century.
