Snapshot
Drew Hendry, Scottish National Party MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey, has stated that his interest in politics was sparked by the Scottish devolution referendum of 1979, although he was too young to vote at the time. Having worked at Electrolux and later founded a digital marketing company, Teclan Ltd, Hendry was elected in the 2007 local elections as a council for the Aird and Loch Ness ward on Highland Council. He became leader of the SNP Highland Council group in 2011, and the following year became leader of the council, committing to Carbon neutral status by 2025. He was selected to contest Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey at the 2015 general election and won, unseating Danny Alexander, the incumbent Liberal Democrat MP and chief secretary to the Treasury on a swing of 20.4 per cent and with a majority of 10,809. On being elected to parliament, he was named as the SNP’s spokesperson on transport and he has also served on the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee and chaired the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Terminal Illness. Hendry currently serves as shadow spokesperson for business, energy and industrial strategy.
