When asked if there was a catalyst that pushed him into politics, Simon Fell said, “pure happenstance. I was looking for a job in my gap year and ended in up working for my local MP – that lit the fuse.” After eroding John Woodcock’s majority when standing in the 2015 and 2017 elections, Fell’s successful election as the MP for Barrow and Furness in December 2019 was third time lucky. Fell was born in Preston, can trace his family’s connection to Furness back to the 1600s, and is the son of two former employees of BAE systems – the constituency’s largest employer. In his maiden speech, Fell outlined his policy priorities, stating, “we must deliver on our promises to level up communities such as Barrow and Furness, to renew our town centres, finally to tackle existing deep-set poverty, and to invest in our NHS and schools. I shall pursue those things with a single-minded focus”. Community work has been at the centre of Fell’s first year in politics. He has said that his greatest political achievement is saving a local GP surgery from closure and is currently working with a range of pressure groups relating to “left-behind” communities. In November 2020, Fell gave a speech in favour of a northern economic coronavirus recovery plan. He said, “this Government were elected to level up, and there has never been a more pressing time to do it.…we are not asking for handouts; we are asking to be put on a level footing, and to be given the chance to stand on our own two feet”. Fell currently sits on the home affairs committee.

Hot Seat

Are there any ways you would like to see Parliament/our political system reformed?

I’m very keen to see a greater understanding of politics amongst, especially, young people and also a kinder politics practiced by those of us in it, and those engaged by it.

Most memorable moment/speech you have witnessed in the Chamber?

Standing by the side of the Speaker’s Chair as it was announced that schools were closing due to COVID. It had been a whirlwind few weeks, but that is when it really hit home.

Best media moment of your career?

Every time I walk away without having destroyed my career I take as a best moment!

How do you like to unwind in your free time? Any favourite TV show or authors?

I have small children so I read less and less, but I’ll often watch something with Mrs Fell when we’re at home together: The West Wing being a favourite (of course!).
