Martin Docherty-Hughes became a young carer aged nine years old. He started working in a confectionery factory at age 16 and began his political career in 1992 when he was elected as Scotland’s youngest councillor, aged just 21. He then returned to education, becoming the first in his family to go to university. Docherty-Hughes then spent a decade at West Dunbartonshire Community and Volunteering Services. In 2012, he was elected to Glasgow City Council. In parliament, Docherty-Hughes has been on the defence committees and sub-committees since 2017, and is also a member of the committee on arms exports controls. Docherty-Hughes was also vice-chair of the APPGs on Ireland and blockchain technology. He is co-chair of the APPG on Estonia and chair of the APPG on Gypsies, Travellers and Roma. Since 2017, he has been SNP spokesperson for industries of the future and blockchain technology. Since January 2020, Docherty-Hughes has been the SNP spokespersons on foreign affairs, PPS to the Westminster leader and the defence team. In parliament, he has said that “as a gay man I find it devastating how members of the LGBT+ community are still subjected to homophobic abuse online”.
