James Cartlidge founded a series of businesses in the housing sector, including Share to Buy Ltd helping first-time buyers get onto the property ladder. Cartlidge also hosts the London Home Show, the biggest event for first time buyers in London. He was a councillor on Babergh District Council and, after failing to win Lewisham Deptford in 2005, was chosen to contest South Suffolk. Upon being elected to parliament, he has sought to promote South Suffolk in a variety of ways, including holding a Suffolk Food Day in the House of Commons, an event which showcases local businesses. Cartlidge has campaigned for stronger mobile connection in his constituency, as well as undertaking a long train journey to showcase the transport difficulties faced by his constituents. In 2019, having worked with the then-foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt as his PSP, later backing Hunt for Conservative leader.Despite being a strong supporter of equal marriage, he was one of a minority of Conservative MPs to vote against imposing the corresponding bill in Northern Ireland “in absentia”. Cartlidge has been on the Public Accounts Commission and the Work and Pensions Committee.
