Snapshot
Rob Butler began his career in journalism – working as a reporter for BBC news, Channel 5 and ITN. In 2005, Butler set up a communications consultancy firm. Being self-employed gave him the time to take on a range of community roles, these included being a member of the sentencing council, sitting on the youth justice board and working as a non-executive director of HM prisons and probation service. Butler was elected as the MP for Aylesbury in December 2019. He grew up in his constituency, a fact he underlined in his maiden speech, stating: “Aylesbury has been a part of my life for longer than I can remember. I was born in the Royal Bucks Hospital in the town, and my first home was in Bedgrove. My roots in the constituency go back even further. My great-grandfather was the village blacksmith in Bledlow Ridge.” This attachment to the area has given Butler a deeper knowledge of local issues, including the seminal issue of HS2. Butler is a member of the APPGs on adverse childhood experiences, special educational needs and disability and Turks and Caicos Islands. He currently sits on the justice committee.
