The US government is reportedly exploring the possibility of purchasing a stake in Intel as part of a broader push to strengthen domestic semiconductor manufacturing. Chips Act funds are under consideration for this purpose. Intel shares reacted positively to the news, gaining around four per cent on one exchange and higher on others, producing significant mid-week rises. The discussions follow a White House meeting earlier this week between the president and Intel’s chief executive. This came after public criticism of the executive’s ties to Chinese technology interests. A deal would mark a departure from previous forms of government assistance to the chipmaker, such as subsidies and tax incentives under the Chips and Science Act.
