Nicușor Dan has been inaugurated as Romania’s new president, ending months of political instability. Elected on a pro-European platform, he now faces urgent economic challenges and a fragmented parliament. His agenda includes cutting the deficit, reaffirming NATO ties, and navigating internal divisions to restore stability.

On 26 May 2025, Nicușor Dan was sworn in as Romania’s new president, marking the conclusion of a prolonged political crisis that began with the annulment of the 2024 presidential election due to allegations of Russian interference. The 55-year-old former mayor of Bucharest secured 53.6% of the vote in the 18 May runoff, defeating far-right candidate George Simion. Simion’s subsequent legal challenge was dismissed by the Constitutional Court, which upheld the election results. Dan, running as an independent on a pro-European platform, campaigned under the slogan “Honest Romania.” His agenda includes institutional reforms, fiscal responsibility, and reaffirming Romania’s support for Ukraine and Western alliances. In his inaugural address, Dan emphasised the need for structural reform, economic stability, and greater public involvement in governance. He faces significant challenges, including a large budget deficit, fractured politics, and societal divisions. One of Dan’s immediate tasks is to nominate a prime minister capable of forming a stable government in a fragmented political landscape. The composition of Parliament, with a significant presence of far-right members, complicates this process. Romania’s budget deficit stands at 9.3% of GDP, the highest in the EU. Dan aims to reduce it to 7.5% by cutting €6 billion in spending, without increasing taxes. Failure to meet this target could jeopardise Romania’s access to EU funds and risk a downgrade of its credit rating. Despite economic challenges, Dan has pledged to meet NATO’s proposed spending target of 3.5% of GDP on defence, plus 1.5% on infrastructure and cybersecurity. This commitment underscores Romania’s pro-Western stance amid regional instability. Dan’s presidency begins amid tensions from the ongoing war in neighbouring Ukraine and questions around U.S. commitment to European security. His leadership is seen as pivotal in stabilising Romania and countering populist influences. As Dan assumes office, he inherits a nation grappling with economic strain and political fragmentation. His ability to implement reforms and foster unity will be critical in navigating Romania through its current challenges....
