Greenland’s parliamentary elections have dealt a setback to American ambitions in the Arctic, with voters backing the pro-business Demokraatit Party over the pro-independence Inuit Ataqatigiit. The result signals a preference for a measured approach to Greenland’s political future, diverging from U.S. aspirations for deeper strategic influence in the region. Demokraatit secured 29.9% of the vote, a substantial increase from its previous 9% share, reflecting voter support for economic stability over rapid independence. The election follows years of tension over Greenland’s geopolitical significance, particularly after former U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial 2019 proposal to buy the territory from Denmark.
