Elon Musk has sharply criticised Donald Trump’s proposed tax bill, calling it a “disgusting abomination.” The legislation, which increases defence spending and cuts social programmes, faces opposition in the Senate. Musk’s remarks have deepened divisions within the Republican Party over the bill’s fiscal impact and policy direction.

Elon Musk has publicly condemned President Donald Trump's proposed tax and spending legislation, the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," labelling it a "disgusting abomination." This criticism follows Musk's recent departure from his role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a position he held within the Trump administration. The bill, which narrowly passed the House of Representatives, aims to extend the 2017 tax cuts and introduces significant increases in military and border security spending. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the legislation would add approximately $3.8 trillion to the national debt over the next decade. Musk's opposition is particularly notable given his previous support for Trump, including substantial political contributions and his leadership role in DOGE. His denunciation of the bill has amplified concerns among fiscally conservative Senate Republicans, potentially complicating its passage in the Senate. Some Republicans are advocating for deeper cuts to offset the bill's impact on the deficit, while others aim to protect funding for programs like Medicaid and green energy initiatives. The bill includes provisions such as exemptions on taxes for tips and overtime pay, and a temporary increase in the child tax credit. However, it also proposes significant cuts to social programs, including over $1 trillion in reductions across safety net services like Medicaid and Medicare. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that these changes could lead to millions losing Medicaid coverage. Despite Musk's strong condemnation, the White House and GOP leadership have dismissed his criticisms, maintaining their commitment to the bill. House Speaker Mike Johnson publicly disagreed with Musk, expressing disappointment in his remarks and suggesting that Musk had previously appeared receptive to the bill's merits during a private conversation. The legislation's future remains uncertain as it moves to the Senate, where internal GOP divisions and external criticisms, including those from prominent figures like Musk, may influence its trajectory. Senate leaders aim to pass the bill by July 4, but ongoing negotiations and potential revisions could delay its final approval....
