Burnham vows support for Ukraine despite threats from Russia
Andy Burnham has promised to keep the pressure on Russia despite Moscow’s “outrageous threats”, on his first official overseas visit to Ukraine as Prime Minister.
Global M&A activity has hit new highs in 2025 as a wave of mega‑mergers and acquisitions gathers pace. In the third quarter alone, deal value surpassed $1 trillion, driven by a flurry of transactions that dwarf typical deals.
The trend is marked by fewer transactions overall but far greater individual deal sizes, signalling that the focus has shifted toward large strategic consolidations. Among the headline transactions is Union Pacific’s proposed $85 billion bid for Norfolk Southern, a deal that would create the first coast‑to‑coast freight railroad in the United States. Alongside that, the tech sector has seen major moves such as Palo Alto Networks’ acquisition of CyberArk.
In software and engineering, the merger of Synopsys and Ansys for roughly $35 billion has redrawn the boundaries of simulation and design tool markets. And in media, the merger of Paramount Global and Skydance Media to form Paramount Skydance closed in August, consolidating entertainment and streaming assets under a new banner.
While dealmakers have shown renewed appetite, challenges remain. Regulatory review is expected to be intensive, especially in heavily scrutinised sectors like transport and telecoms. Antitrust and national interest concerns could slow or block some deals.
