Mark Carney, former Governor of the Bank of England, has led Canada’s Liberal Party to a minority government following the 28 April 2025 federal election. The Liberals won 142 seats, short of a majority, with the Conservatives securing 129. Carney succeeded Justin Trudeau as party leader earlier this year. Negotiations with smaller parties are expected. Voter turnout was approximately 68 percent. The new Parliament will convene in early May, when Carney will present his agenda.

Mark Carney, the former Governor of the Bank of England, has secured a minority government in Canada following the federal election held on 28 April 2025. The Liberal Party, under Carney's leadership, won the most seats but did not achieve an outright majority, meaning it will require support from smaller parties to govern. Carney became leader of the Liberal Party in early 2025, succeeding Justin Trudeau, who stepped down after leading the party for nearly a decade. Carney had previously served as Governor of the Bank of Canada before taking up the role of Governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020. The election outcome ends a period of majority or near-majority Liberal rule under Trudeau.
