Robert F. Kennedy Jr. narrowly confirmed as HHS Secretary after fierce Senate showdown over his vaccine stance.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a prominent environmental lawyer and known vaccine skeptic, was sworn in as the 26th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on February 13, 2025, following a narrow Senate confirmation vote of 52-48. The confirmation process was marked by intense debate, with all Senate Democrats and Republican Senator Mitch McConnell opposing the nomination. McConnell, a polio survivor, expressed concerns about Kennedy's past anti-vaccine rhetoric, stating, "I will not condone the re-litigation of proven cures, and neither will millions of Americans who credit their survival and quality of life to scientific miracles." Despite the controversy, Kennedy secured confirmation after providing assurances to moderate Republicans, including Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, that he would base vaccine recommendations on data-driven, evidence-based research.  During the swearing-in ceremony at the White House, President Donald Trump praised Kennedy's dedication to addressing chronic diseases and environmental issues, stating, "Bobby created a nationwide movement... to end this horrible chronic disease crisis that exists in America" and “he's absolutely committed to getting dangerous chemicals out of our environment and out of our food supply”.  Trump also endorsed Kennedy by using a variation of his own slogan, claiming that “Bobby is going to lead a great national mission to make America healthy again.” In his remarks, Kennedy emphasised the need for transparency and integrity within public health agencies, asserting plans to implement "radical transparency and returning gold standard science ... agencies such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As he assumes leadership of HHS, Kennedy faces the challenge of rebuilding trust in public health institutions while addressing concerns stemming from his previous anti-vaccine advocacy. His tenure will be closely watched by both supporters and critics as he navigates the complexities of the nation's health policies.
